Established by French Huguenot refugees in the 17th century, Franschhoek—which means "French Corner" in Dutch—has retained its Gallic heritage like a well-aged wine. This is evident in its architecture, the names of its estates, and its reputation as the food and wine heartland of South Africa.
Franschhoek's high streets are dotted with some of the country's finest dining establishments. Restaurants here offer a symphony of flavors, playing harmoniously with the local produce. A notable highlight was the famed Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français, which, even in the off-season, buzzed with energy and invention. Each dish, a work of art, captured the essence of South African terroir.
No visit to Franschhoek is complete without sampling the wines that make this region famous. The Vignerons de Franschhoek, a collective of wine farms, ensures every palate is catered to, from robust reds to vivacious sparkling wines.
