A Timeless Getaway in Atenas, Costa Rica - December 2019

Nestled in the verdant valleys of the Alajuela province, Atenas is often touted as having the "best climate in the world." This small town, with its laid-back charm and soothing temperatures, made for a perfect detour during my Costa Rican odyssey in December 2019. Here's a snapshot of my experiences, embracing the tranquility and picturesque landscapes of Atenas.

The Journey to Atenas

The drive to Atenas from San José was something out of a postcard. As the city's buzz faded, the scenic vistas took hold. Rolling hills gave way to coffee plantations and fruit stands, tempting with their colorful bounty. Upon entering Atenas, the air felt palpably fresher, and the town's welcome sign — proclaiming its claim to climatic fame — greeted me with a bold assertion that would not disappoint.

Embracing the Town's Heart

Atenas is not a destination flooded by tourists, and this gives it an authenticity that's becoming rare. Central Park, or 'Parque Central', is the heartbeat of the town. Surrounded by an eclectic mix of local restaurants and quaint shops, the park offers a glimpse into the everyday life of the 'Atenienses,' who spend time socializing, savoring local dishes, or simply enjoying the eternal spring-like weather.

The Festive Spirit

December is a special time in Atenas, as holiday festivities color the town with vibrant lights and Christmas decor. The Parque Central becomes the nucleus of celebration, hosting a stunning nativity scene that conjures an almost celestial serenity at night. Families gather, vendors sell seasonal treats, and there's an infectious spirit of joy and community in the air.

Exploring Beyond the Center

A trip to Atenas is incomplete without venturing out to its surrounding areas. Coffee tours are a must-do, where you can witness firsthand the meticulous process that goes into a cup of Costa Rican gold. The Doka Estate and El Toledo Coffee tours were enlightening experiences that deepened my appreciation for this globally cherished beverage.

Nature's Retreat

Only a short distance from Atenas, there are numerous opportunities to connect with nature. Enjoying a hike in the nearby picturesque trails or visiting the mesmerizing Botanical Orchid Garden in La Garita was a nature lover's dream. December's mild dry season weather was the perfect time to explore without the hindrance of the rainy season's downpours.

Conclusion: The Serene Side of Costa Rica

As I bid adieu to Atenas, I carried with me a sense of tranquility that can only be found in such unspoiled corners of the world. Atenas, with its simple charm, friendly locals, and sedate pace, provided a soothing contrast to the adrenaline-packed offerings of Costa Rica's coastal tourist hubs. It's the kind of place where one can truly disconnect, delve into the 'pura vida' lifestyle, and perhaps, rediscover the essence of holiday cheer.
